About Granny's
Our store began with a handful of our favorite wilderness survival books on a shelf in Tom's office. We operated under the name of our original business, Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School. A few years went by and the store took over the office, the family room, the living room and the workshop. In September of 2003 we bought Granny's Country Store in Silver Star and moved the bookstore out of the house. Granny, a.k.a. Karen, ran the grocery store and post office for twenty-six years, and she was ready to retire. We liked her name for the store and adopted it for our bookstore.

The grocery store and post office have been together since the earliest days of Silver Star's History in the 1860's, and in the same location since the early 1900's. We liked the idea of having the post office and bookstore in the same building, so we could more easily pack and ship our orders. But that meant we had to learn how to run the post office. That was a bit intimidating at first, but we adapted well. We start sorting the mail by 7:30 a.m. and open the store at 8 a.m. Silver Star isn't exactly a busy town, but when our customers need something they usually seem to need it all at the same time. Besides the post office, we are the only source of groceries in town, and we sell livestock shipping permits. We wrap up the post office in the afternoon and close at 6 p.m.
