Tipis - Tepees - Teepees
History and Design of the Cloth Tipi
by Linda A. Holley

From the first tipis made of buffalo or elk hide to the cloth tipis of today, Tipis, Tepees, Teepes is a fresh look at the rich history and evolution of this ancient dwelling that has been used since the dawn of human civilization. Today, tipis can be found all over the world, from North America to Asia to Australia.

Tipis are currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity because of their unique qualities. They are comfortable to live in for long periods, durable, weather resistant, and easy to transport. New synthetic materials and innovative construction techniques make tipis adaptable to a variety of climates and living conditions.

Considerations when buying a new or used tipi are reviewed, and for the more adventuresome, step-by-step instructions detail how to construct a well-built tipi. Different tipi styles, materials to make a tipi, and ways to decorate a tipi are explored. A plethora of drawings, diagrams, and photographs take the guesswork out of the process. In addition, ways to care for a tipi, transport a tipi, and pitch a tipi are also explored. Allow your mind to be opened up to the romance of the beautiful tipi; allow your heart to be opened to a life closer to the land. Tipis were a vital part of the cultures of prehistoric peoples and they offer the same benefits to us today.

Author Linda A. Holley has spent most of her life studying tipis and Native American culture. She graduated from Florida State University with a BS and MS in Art Education/Constructive Design. In 1970, she became an art, science, and history teacher, but she is now retired after thirty-four years. She has over thirty years of experience making tipis. 2007. 248 pages. Gibbs Smith Publisher. ISBN: 978-1-58685-511-5.

The Indian Tipi
Its History, Construction, and Use
by Reginald and Gladys Laubin

The conical tipi of the Plains Indians is an artistic and practical shelter. It is roomy, well ventilated and well lighted, cool in summer, resistant to high winds and heavy downpours, and with a cheery fire inside, cozy in the severest winter weather. First published in 1957, The Indian Tipi is still the best known and most authoritative work available on the tipi's history, construction, and use.

The Indian Tipi provides useful comparisons between various tipi styles and advice on determining the right size tipi, plus instructions for building your own tipi. You can learn the essentials of setting up a tipi and making adjustments for the seasons and all types of weather, plus how to set up your living and sleeping space. Also included are sections on fire building and cooking, including some recipes, plus short sections on brain tanning, making parfleche containers and sewing moccasins. The book includes tipi etiquette for hosts and visitors, plus a few words about how to properly dedicate a new lodge. Numerous photos, drawings, and detailed diagrams are included. 1957, 1977. Second Edition 1989. 384 pages. University of Oklahoma Press. ISBN: 0-8061-2236-6.

American Indian Archery
by Reginald and Gladys Laubin

Reginald and Gladys Laubin devoted their lives towards the preservation of Native American culture, especially Indian dances, the Indian tipi, and Indian archery. American Indian Archery is a personalized account of Reginald Laubin's interest in Native American archery, both past and present.

Native American bows and arrows were designed and built for power, accuracy, and practicality. American Indian Archery touches on the history and culture of numerous tribes, comparing bow styles and shooting styles. Laubin made numerous bows of his own and described his experiences. There is sufficient information in the book to enable the reader to make their own bows and arrows, although there are other books that are more instructive in that area. American Indian Archery is probably a better text for the archery enthusiast who wants to dive deeper into the variations between the bows and arrows used by different tribes. Laubin includes coverage of the horn bow, bow strings, medicine bows, Indian crossbows, blowguns, stone bows, and harps, as well as the mythology, social customs and games related to bow and arrow use. 1980. 192 pages. University of Oklahoma Press. ISBN: 0-8061-2387-7.
