Primal Paints
Stone Age Pigment Paint Kit

Welcome to your own Primal Paint Kit--emerging from the antiquity of your hunter-gatherer ancestors. The use of earth paints dates back at least 250,000 years and continues to be an important part of many cultures today. Anyone who has seen the cave paintings in Europe, Africa, Australia, or the U.S. can attest to the beautiful potential of Stone Age pigment paints.
Primal Paints are all natural and gathered sustainably from a variety of wild sources throughout the U.S. by Vince Pinto. Each kit has a unique set of colors, reflecting the diversity and availability of these sources. Most of the colors come from minerals, while others, especially black, come from organic sources, such as charred wood.
Be creative and release the primal artist within! Primal Paints are great for painting on natural surfaces, such as buckskin, rawhide, antler, bone, shells, wood, and gourds. The paints can also be used on modern surfaces like paper or cardboard.

Each Primal Paint Kit Includes:
  • Paint Palette: A uniquely shaped stone suitable to grind solid paints upon.
  • Solid Paints: Several colors (varies for each paint kit).
  • Powdered Paint: One color.
  • Buckskin Wiping Pad
  • Paint Applicators: Five yucca brushes and one feather applicator.

How to Use Primal Paints
Paints: Although colors vary in consistency and hardness, solid paints need to be ground upon the paint palette using a liquid medium, such as water, saliva, vegetable oils, or animal fats. Each medium imparts a unique color tone and ability of the paints to adhere to a particular surface. Grind a color with your choice liquid until you have a viscous solution of uniform consistency. Now use a yucca brush, feather shaft, or your fingers to apply the paint. Pigments can be mixed on the palette for additional colors.
Applicators: The yucca brushes can be used as is, with solid ends, or the tips can be gently pounded to make a splayed brush. Cut the ends back as they become worn. The feather shaft is ready for use. Clean applicators in water after use.
Buckskin Wiping Pad: Use the pad to spread colors or to clean the applicators.
Safety: All paints, natural or not, contain a variety of chemicals. Avoid breathing any rock dust as you grind the paints. KEEP PAINTS AWAY FROM UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN, and do not apply them to the skin, other than using the finger tips for painting. Note that pigment paints can permanently stain clothing and other valued surfaces.
